Any advice on using a DSLR in manual mode?
So, I have had my DSLR for a few months now and I'm tired of using it in Auto mode. I figure since I have such an awesome camera, I should learn how to use it - in manual mode.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, as well as links to resources that could help me.
I only have the kit lens, as of now (18-55mm, and I guess I should mention that I have a Nikon D3000.). I'm going to buy a new lens soon. It's just a matter of figuring out which will work best for my needs. I mainly take pictures of my daughters. I want a lens that can achieve a lower aperture. And is not too bulky!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What does the sic stand for on a 50mm lens?
I'm looking at two lens for my Nikon D5000.both 50mm f1.4 One is f/1.4 D AF after it and the other has 1.4G SIC SW prime I don't understand the differance. Went to my local "camera shop" to buy and they gave me information i knew was bad so now i'm looking on line for a good 50mm f1.4 but need to know what the rest of the information means after the 1.4.

Is my flash malfunctioning or am I just a dummy?
I got bigger flash that attaches to the top of my Nikon D5000, I was just experimenting so I didn't pay much. I was taking normal pictures just the camera's regular flash, but decided to attach the new one and test it out. The first photo I took turned out way too bright (as I figured) so I adjusted the shutter to be quicker, when I did this, this is what I got
When I adjusted the settings the other way, I got
I have no idea why my photo is being cut in half, and I would really appreciate it if someone more knowledgeable would enlighten this amateur.

Why are my pictures still blurry?
I'm using a sunpak platinum plus tripod with a nikon d70 and 24-85mm lens. I used them to take pictures of landscapes in the snow. The snow was blowing pretty hard but not enough to make the tripod move at all. I was using the retractable spikes too. My pics still turned out a little blurry. I mean I always see crystal clear pictures that people tak of snow and things. I set the focus to infinity and the aperture to the smallest (largest number). Does doing it that way affect the clarity? Should I focus on something in the frame? Below is a link to a pic:

Is a Canon T2i a good second DSLR?
I'm stepping up from a Nikon D60 and am hoping to have a career in sport photography or something of that sort. I also want to do some video along the way. I'm in gr.9 and taking a media arts course next year, and I have sorta stuck with the t2i as my next dslr. Are there any others I could consider?
