$650 DSLR for Christmas (Cannon vs Nikon)?
Should I go with the Nikon D3100 or Canon XSi as my first DSLR camera?
I'm going to do mostly casual photography and portraits of dogs but would like to get into action sports like skateboarding.
The Nikon feels better in my hand but which ever brand I go with now is going to be long term because I'm going to invest in lenses, so I want to pick the brand better for me long-term

Why does my dslr's flash work in landscape orientation.but not in portrait?
Built-in flash on my Nikon d3100 works great when oriented horizontally, but meters the far left side of the frame when I shoot vertically (portrait) orientation.
Can't afford a speedlight for camera?
And i'm planning to do some low key photography like this one.
Most of the speedlights i find at london drugs and futureshop all cost over 200. I was thinking of buying a bright flashlight to replace the speedlight. I have a nikon d5000 so i need to also buy a wireless flash trigger thats cheap. Any ideas on models.
I can't decide! Should I get the 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/1.8? They seem almost the same, except the 15mm difference. I'm most likely going to get a Nikon D3100, and I know auto focusing with the 50mm won't work, but it doesn't really matter to me. Also, I'll probably be taking a LOT of portrait photos (just for fun) and pictures with friends. Mostly indoors but outdoors at times. I really want a nice DOF and get a blurred background.

Shooting HDR by using a Nikon D80?
I've been trying to shoot HDR pictures by using my Nikon D80, but the outcome is not that good. I switched to P mode, using bracket and exposure -0.7, -0.3, 0, +0.3 and +0.7. After merging these 5 pics together by Photoshop CS3, it doesn't looks different much though, unlike the other HDR pics I saw online.
Is there any special techniques to capture HDR pics for D80? What about the settings and the condition (weather, places) for good HDR pics?
