Portable/thin digital SLR cameras?

I want a digital SLR camera that is portable & isn't heavy like the usual one, the Nikon P7000 looks thinner but is there anything else out there? I will go to the store & look at them but i want to know what to ask for.

Camera advise please

A while ago last year I bought a used Canon digital camera (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX1IS-Stabilized-2-8-inch/dp/B001SER44W/ from my sister, and unfortunately did not read reviews about it before I bought it. I found out very shortly that it had extremely poor image quality, especially indoors. I really enjoy photography and I can't take good pictures if I don't have a good camera (:P), so I'm looking for an upgrade.

I'm hoping for one less than $300, it doesn't matter what kind, but I know most about Canon's and Nikon's. A fairly good zoom, at least 12MP, and good in low-light situations. ANY ideas, even if it doesn't "fully qualify" would be greatly appreciated! I can use them all: P thanks!

Added (1). Btw, I wouldn't just need it in low-light situations. I'd use it for scenery, portraits, you know… Pretty much everything. But good ISO ranges are a necessity.

I droped my camera. Can I send it in to get a new one?

So, I got a Nikon camera for Christmas and I drooped it while taking a picture. It fell in such a way the lens broke. If I send it back can they fix it or replace it for me?
thanks!
Oh and by the way the type of camera I have is a Nikon cooplix s3000

Added (1). I always use the strap. My friend jumped out to scare me when I was taking a picture and it flew up and hit the ground.

What is the point of having a really fancy 300+ dollar camera?

If you aren't a professional photographer? I'm just wondering XD

I really want a Nikon or Canon Digital SLR, but I don't see the point in getting one if I'm not like a professional photographer and all.

Digital Camera or Digital SLR?

I love my Nikon N50 film camera but i want to get a new digital camera or digital SLR camera that i can take to parties. The Nikon i have is heavy & too big to take to parties, games, etc. So is there a digital camera that will give me great pictures while being portable? Or even a portable digital SLR?
Price isn't a huge issue but under $700 would be nice.
