What is the point of having a really fancy 300+ dollar camera?

If you aren't a professional photographer? I'm just wondering XD
I really want a Nikon or Canon Digital SLR, but I don't see the point in getting one if I'm not like a professional photographer and all.

In my opinion i would get one to learn how to use it and someday maybe i can become a professional photographer!

It doesn't matter if you are a professional or not. I have a Nikon. It's wonderful. I'm not professional, but I love photography. The cool effects that you can use to edit the AMAZINg picture it gives, and to create memories through a still. It's so fun!

DSLR cameras have much better sensors than cheaper cameras and allow you to control every aspect of the camera, leading to much better photos. You can't get shots like these with a point and shoot camera:
Since when do you have to be a professional to like getting the best photos you can?

DSLR's are fully adustable cameras.
Unlike P&S cameras, you can control the aperture and shutter speed of the camera. What does that mean? It means you can shoot light graffiti, use selective focus, buy a whole array of specialty lenses and a sensor that is over 15 times larger than one found on a P&S camera

Why do some people have a fancy car when they could take the bus, instead?
Because they want that car, they like driving it, they are passionate about it, they see many advantages in driving a nice car vs riding on a bus. Yes, it costs more money, but to them, it is worth it.

To enjoy yourself more while you're still alive. Same reason why consumers nowadays buy more things loaded with more features than they really ever need.

Control. That is all there's to it. If you don't know the basic principles of photography, you won't know how to set those controls and you won't appreciate the US$700 dSLR price tag.
If you want a fancy camera, get a point-and-shoot.
