What does a blinking error message on the lcd screen of a Nikon n-50 film slr camera mean?

When you power on the camera you just get "cpu error" blinking on the lcd screen.

The cpu is the Central Processing Unit. In this case it's the guts of the camera just like the cpu is the guts of any computer.

Is this a really old camera? This person has quite a bit to say about this camera dying.
