Sony Nex-5 vs Nikon D3100?

I'm not very much in to photography, but I would like to become a more serious photographer. I'm not sure weather to get the Sony Nex-5 or the Nikon D3100. I want to be able to take good quality photos where I can manually change the settings. This sounds like I'm leaning towards the Nikon, but the Sony's size factor is very convincing for me because portability is a big factor. Also, do you think it would be necessary to have an optical viewfinder? WHICH ONE SHOULD I GET!

Free Video Editing Software?

I want a video editing software that gives me like filters or presets or something that sort of changes the color of my video. Maybe a editing software like adobe after effects (I tried downloading the trial already but, no go) I have a Nikon D3100 so I want a good editing software that will do my videos justice. Not like windows movie maker lol. So yeah any suggestions?

Why SLR price is going up?

In Australia SLR camera price is going up, specially Nikon d3100. The prices in Kogan is really unstable. Kogan used to sell d3100 for AUD 489. Later it went up AUD 579 and now since last week the price AUD 619. There's no significant changes in Australian currency rate. So why still the price going up instead of going down. Is it due to christmas. Where I can buy a cheap SLR Camera.

My Nikon D60 let me down?

I use a Nikon D60 with a SC28 sync cord connected to a SB800 Flash. Last night during a very heavy use period, the flash seemed to stop communicating with the D60. The flash would fire sporadically then fine for awhile, then act up again. My question is which piece should hit the dumpster, the sync cord (which I think is the culprit), or the SB800 (which may be the problem) or God forbid, the D60.

What do I need to buy if I want a backdrop stand and a backdrop? What kind to buy?

I would like to take some pictures at home. Just family pictures, my daughter, boyfriend and I. Nothing fancy.

I have the Nikon D7000 and I have an external flash, a diffusor, tripod and all that.

What do I need to buy to buy to set up a backdrop and a stand. And what size to buy. I want to be able to sit on the backdrop and see the backdrop on the floor and behind our backs. Any recommendations and what should prices be?

Photographers, do you suggest Nikon or Canon?

I was planning on ordering either a Nikon D90 or a Canon Powershot around Thanksgiving. If you suggest any other great brands, let me know.

Which lens should I begin with?

Well, I was originally going to buy the Nikon D5000 kit which comes with a 18-55mm.
But now I'm wondering if I should just buy the Nikon D5000 body with a 50-200mm lens, since it's nearly the same price.
Which lens is more idealistic for a DSLR beginner?
On a tight budget, so I will pretty much have to stick to one lens for probably about 6 months…

Added (1). Oh, and if this helps, I love taking nature pictures (animals, flowers, insects).
