I have a nikon d90, with an 18-55mm standard lens, and i want to upgrade! I want something sharper and clearer, but still in an 18-55mm form, or similar!

The 18-55mm lens is not a bad lens.

But if you want sharper, you either need to go with a prime (non-zoom) such as a 35mm f/2.8 or 50mm f/1.8, or a pro-caliber lens, such as a 24-70mm f/1.8.

Also consider the 18-105mm lens. This is the standard kit lens for the D90, but the 18-55 is sometimes substituted by dealers to reduce the price (or increase their profit margin). The 18-105mm lens, still considered a kit lens, is marginally sharper than the 18-55mm you have.

Also, lenses tend to become sharper as they are stopped down. So if you look at a 50mm f/1.8 vs your lens, and set the aperture of both to f/5.6, the 50mm is going to be significantly sharper.

All lenses perform better if they are not at their widest open aperture. For the 18-55mm lens you have, it is wide open at 55mm, but the 50mm f/1.8 is stopped down significantly - which by itself improves sharpness.

Therefore, the no cost option for you is to use your lens at f/8. That will result in a sharper photo.

I also have the 18-200mm lens, and optically there are some soft areas along the focal length. This is just a natural result of the lens having a high 11x power. But at f/8, it is as sharp as my $1.200 80-200 f/2.8

I have the following lenses for my D90, and they are all fairly high quality lenses, and I can recommend any and all of them, as I have extensive experience with them:

Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5~5.6
Nikon 35mm f/1.8
Nikon 50mm f/1.8
Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8
Tokina 80-400mm f/4.5~5.6 (hard to find in the US)
Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro

The Nikon 18-200mm is best when used at f/8 as I mentioned above, and the Tokina 80-400mm is best when used at f/8 and high shutter speeds as it does not have VR. These two lenses therefore are usually used only in ideal daylight conditions.

You have plenty of good choice from the other post

But I will had those;

Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II LD Aspherical IF (don't we love their name.) It's cheap, good construction, it is sharper than your actual lens and you get a 2.8 aperture that can be use toward the whole range.

Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Prime lens, very expensive, very sharp.

Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8 D IF-ED expensive, sharp.

Nikkor AF-S 16-85mm f/3-5-5.6G ED VR DX mid range price, sharp, the downside is the f3, 5-f5, 6 aperture (some can live with it)
