Canon versus nikon dslrs?

I'm looking into a new slr camera, and i've got it down to nikon and canon. For ou guys personally, which of the 2 brands do you prefer? And i've got some old nikon lenses in storage, so if i were to get a nikon it would be the d90 or up. What do you think is the canon slr that can be best compared with the nikon d90?

Step-up or step-down ring adapters?

Am new in photography and i need some help. I have a nikon d5000 with an 18-50mm lens (52mm ring), and 70-300mm lens (62mm ring). I wanted to buy filters that i can interchangeably use with both. What if just buy a one size filter so i can use it both on the 52mm and 62mm rings (as above) and use a stepping ring adapter? Would i buy a 52-62mm step-up ring adapter and 62mm filters? Or a 62-52mm step-down ring adapter and a 52mm filters?

A DSLR camera that would work with older lens?

I consider myself an amateur photographer, I currently own a Nikon D40 and I find AF-S lens to be a bit expensive. A just bought a Nikkor 35mm f1.8 for 180£. Looking at other AF-S lens I find them expensive to the point of inaccessible. I would be interested in some 10-24mm but even Tamron are expensive.

Now my question: if I was to get a new body what should I look for? Meaning some DSLR that would work with older lens which I'm to find cheap on ebay. Autofocus function is a must and if I had a choice I would stick with Nikon.

Thank you

Added (1). I've tried manual focus and it is a lot harder.a lot of hit and miss

Added (2). I'm not much interested in telephoto. So if i was to buy one all-round lens id would go for a cheap 18-200, and i know tamron suffers from softness.
i'm more interested in widelens, low light and fish eye lens.

Added (3). Thanks zack and photoace, answers getting better and better

Just bought a new Nikon D5000?

And I would say the battery lasts for about three to four hours if I'm taking pictures non-stop! When I got it like 3 days ago, I charged the battery for about two hours. The intructions say that that is the time needed to fully recharge it. But shouldn't it last longer? Did I do anything wrong? Should I have charged it the first time longer? Please give me your feedback! And also how much pictures should I 4GB card hold? I thought about 900, but it only holds like about 300?!
Please answer all the listed question!

Is there any way I can get the effect of a fish eye lens without actually having the lens?

I want to take a picture of a broad street with this effect. The camera I'll use is a nikon d90 (i think!) i wondered if there was anyway to achieve this effect with a normal lens (i only know the very basics of using it), or through editing on photoshop.thanks!

Added (1). I tried the "spherize" tool on photoshop, but it doesn't distort the whole picture, only a circle in the middle. Is there anything similar to this that might work?
