Would this camera body and lens combination work?

It would. But you need a wide angle as well otherwise it would be very restrictive. Buy 18-55mm along with it.(if you don't have it already)

The lens will fit and function correctly on the body. So yes. The Nikkor 55-200mm is a pretty good lens for outdoor sports, depending on how far you are from the action. I would be a pretty bad lens for any kind of landscapes, and it would be an okay lens for portraits.
