How to know if my DSLR camera is in it's good performance?

Note, if you don't want me to read my long story you can skip to the last paragraph to see my question =] personally I don't think is that bad. Ty
Hi guys: well I bought (bid) an used nikon D90 on eBay with a pretty satisfied price. An the seller had an excellent feedback and stated that there's nothin wrong with the camera it's in very good condition with 1100 shutter count.
And after I told my dad (he's a prof photographer, btw I bought this camera I just want to learn more) anyways, he didn't like the fact the I bought off from eBay due to the fact that the camera and lens have to go thru a rough transaction by UPS. And you know how ups nowadays they throw boxes like garbage. He told me camera are very sensitive to vibration, sometimes even a bad shake can cause a lot of problems in the near future which will affect the quality of the image… Is he right btw? Well I don't really doubt him, but just asking.
So my question is, now I have the camera and the lens, it looks fine, and the picture quality is superb. But I still want to do a full checkup and make sure there's no damage and what so ever during the transaction. Because I can still get a refund within 7 days according to the seller. Is there a place (company) I can go to do a full check-up? (reliable of course) (will pay if it costs any).

I live in new York city, zip code 10022 if this helps any!

Thank you so much for your help. Means a lot to me

Should I wait for the Nikon D3100?

Or is there another camera from Canon that is comparable? Is the Rebel T2i a better choice (not looking at price)? I know that they both record the same quality video, but the T2i has external mic input for example.

Also when is the exact release date of the D3100?

Added (1). Does the T2i have autofocus when shooting video?

Translating number of millimeters into digital 3x numbers?

Simple "Point and click" digital camera measure the zoom capability as a number followed by an "X", eg 3x, 5x.

SLR cameras measure the zoom as a number of millimeters.

If I have a Nikon D40 SLR, what millimeter lens would be "4x"?

Am I any good at Photography?

I'm 14 years old, and I bought a Nikon D90 a year or so ago (but I have been taking pictures before that, with a less-professional camera) and I'm just wondering if you think that I have any potential?
I really love photography, and I think it would be amazing to be able to travel around the world to amazing places and take pictures for magazines (National Geographic) or something!
There are just some of the pictures that I take.

How to fix the scratches on my camera?

I own a Nikon D80 and this morning I was taking pictures and I viewed them on my computer and each picture had this little scratch on it along with a few dots. So i took the lens off, cleaned it with a lens cloth and the problem was still there. So I tried my other lens out and again, the problem is there. This makes me think the scratches are on the actual camera!

Professional Camera for Christmas?

I'm looking for a new camera for Christmas. My parents have agreed that I can have one as long as it is not too expensive.

I like the look of something like the Nikon D40, but it doesn't have to be this model.

Anyway, I would like a good quality camera like the above, but I don't want to pay the world for it.

If you could help it would mean a lot!

Thank you!

Added (1). My parents say that I have to contribute half, so I really have to say that the camera can't ideally be more than 200pounds, if their in a good mood, perhaps they could stretch to 230pounds.
