How to Get a Vivitar 550fd flash to work on a Nikon Camera?

This is my first flash. I have no idea how to use it LOL. I can't seem to get it to flash i got all the way up to where i saw the ready light but nothing happened. What settings do i need to put it on or what do i need to do to see if it works. I had a Nikon D70. But i'm (hopefully getting a D70s soon).

Added (1). The d70s upgrade is pointless but my coworker wants to buy it from me when i get a new dslr in February. (tax time: D) i told her i would she's just starting out too. I sold the other camera already on eBay i didn't know she wanted one. :X but yes i can sell the vivitar. Thanks EVERYONE!

but on the subject of new cameras which is "better" d90.d200.d300. And I'm possibly looking at the d1's (d1h, d1x, etc etc) i'm not gonna be printing over 8x10's most likely so i don't really need like 1000 mp's lol.of course all of these will be used and hopefully under $300 thus I'm pretty poor.

I had a Nikon d300 with 18-200mm vr and an mb-d10 stolen.

I have, however, since replaced all of these with cash, but I now have the good problem of thinking what to spend the voucher on, which was provided through my house insurance.

Equipment which I currently, mainly use is a d7000, 18-200mm vr, 70-200 2.8 vr i, 17-55mm 2.8 and an sb800 flash.

I'm thinking along the lines of another body, say d5100, ( I do generally use 2 bodies ). A powerful telephoto, say Sigma 150-500mm OS. I maybe need another flash, for CLS.

Apart from a broad section of photography, I have recently taken up Astrophotography and Bird Photography.

Using the Nikon D700 in DX Crop Mode?

I use a 50mm 1.8G lens on a D5000, if I put it on a full-frame camera like the D700 does it get wider? I read that if you put a DX lens (not sure if it's a DX lens) on a D700 the camera automatically changes to DX sensor format (24x16).So if I look through the viewfinder will the focal length look the same as on a DX D5000? I'm confused about DX and FX full-frame.

Added (1). Ok so 50mm on full frame "looks" 15mm wider than on a cropped body. On a D700 if you want it to look like 75mm is there a setting where the camera can be cropped? If there's a setting for that, that would be cool because you can you use two different angle of views.

What should my Nikon FX midrange setup be?

I have a D700 with:
14-24mm f/2.8
35mm f/2
50mm f/1.4 G
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8

My question is should I stick to the two prime lens and buy a cheap midrange zoom like the Nikon 24-85mm for $300 OR should I sell the two prime lens for about $550 and put that money towards a used $1500 Nikon 24-70mm. I'm on a budget right now and I'm contemplating on which midrange I should go with. Which one would be smart financially and optically.

Can I use this lens with my camera? 85mm on Nikon D7000?

I have a Nikon D7000 right now and wondering if I could use the Nikon 85mm 1.4 lens with it? I know I will have to back up quite a bit to get the shot, but will the photos be just as good as they would on a full frame?

I'm also looking into getting the Nikon 24-70mm lens, how would that work on my D7000?

I can only afford one lens right now, and need a nice lens more than a full frame like the D700. If I got the D700 instead I wouldn't be able to get any lenses to compliment it.
