What is a step up from the Nikon D5000?

I loved my Nikon D5000, but it got ruined in a horrible rain storm. So I figured that this would be a good opportunity to step it up a bit. I'm on a tight budget so I can't step it up to a Nikon D3 or anything. What Nikon cameras would be a good upgrade? My budget is about $400-600 for a body only.

How much are the Nikon SB-80DX and SB-50DX worth nowadays?

I have a Nikon D100, which uses Nikon's old D-TTL flash metering system. As such, I'm looking for a flash which supports this metering system. The new SB-600, 700, 800 and 900 do, but they are out of my price range.

My two considerations are the SB-50DX and the SB-80DX.

How much do you think it is worth paying for each of these flashes in 2011, given how old they are?

The first of these, as I understand it, would be of very little use when I eventually upgrade to an i-TTL camera, as it doesn't support manual operation (or i-TTL).

As for the SB-80DX, I'm not so sure. I know it doesn't support i-TTL, but what kind of performance can I expect from it as an off camera flash if I upgrade to an i-TTL camera. I imagine it won't work in it's D-TTL optical slave mode. What manual capabilities will it have? How would it have to be triggered? Would it work optically with an i-TTL flash or would I need to use radio triggers?

How does autofocus work on Nikon cameras with in body focus motors?

My Nikon D100 has an in body focus motor, but try as I might, I can't see where on the camera, the AF screw is. Just out of interest, does anyone know how autofocus is set up with Nikon cameras with in body focus motors?

Whereabouts in the body is the motor likely to be? How big is it? How does it attach to the lens?

Buying a used DSLR camera?

Hi i'm starting to get into photography a little and currenntly only have a nikon point and shoot thats 16mp. I want a slr but don't want to spend a ton of money on a slight hobby i'm just getting into. I'm looking at used slrs that are only about 7-10 megapixels and can't be beat for the price i can buy a nikon/cannon body with 2 lenses and filters for about $250. Do you think the lack of features or megapixels for being so cheap will hurt me? If so what do you recommend are the minimum specs for a beginner keep in mind the MAX i want to spend for a kit is about $325 and only want a nikon/cannon or other high end brand and i'm looking at b&h's website along with ebay craigslist ect

Added (1). Thanks for all the additional info guys! And i know megapixels are not necessarily the biggest deal but i was worried i would buy a camera so old that is basically already considered completely obsolete and useless.
i'm currently looking at nikon D50, D100, D70 (Maybe a D3000 if i get a good package)
i was also looking at 3/4 slrs that are smaller, are these worth it? Like the olympus E-p1
do you have any experience with the cameras listed above? I'm open to recommendations about other nikons or any other brand

Is it advisable to buy camera bodies second hand?

I currently have a Nikon D100 and I would really like a new body, though I don't have much money to throw around.

I've come across a good deal on a second hand, but fairly high end, model. However, apparently this particular unit has two problems:
- difficulty connecting to the computer via USB for transfer and remote control
- difficulty recognising older (non AF-G?) lenses

I'm not overly concerned by the first item on this list. As for the second, this may well mean I wouldn't be able to use Nikon's AF-D 50mm f/1.8 which I've been considering buying. Does it make more sense to get a body in better working order so I can save on lenses, or would I be better off saving for the f/1.8G anyway?

Also, do these problems perhaps suggest that the camera isn't in great shape and might not last that long anyway.

PS: It says it's had about 35000 shutter actuations. Is that considered a lot?

Problems w/ shutter speed & aperture on my camera

I'm currently enrolled in Art Institute of Pittsburgh for photography and on shooting assignments we have to shoot in Manual mode. (I have a Nikon D300)
My problem is with the aperture and shutter speed. Now, I know how to change both of these settings, but my aperture will only go so far.
Example: When I change my shutter speed to 1/13 the aperture won't go any lower than 3.5 which makes a dark image.
1/60 shutter speed, aperture won't go lower than F4.

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
Please, this would help a lot on my assignments.

Sports photography lens setup?

I'm a beginner sports photographer and I need some information on lenses.
I see videos and pro's at games using 400mm f2.8, but I have a Nikon D300S so a 400mm is an equivalent 600mm which I think is too long for football (soccer) photography (mostly).
Which set-up would be better for sports?
1) Sigma 120-300mm f2.8
2) Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and Sigma 300mm f2.8 and a second D300S

If you have any other recommendations then please include them in your comments

My camera flash kills things?

Its super strong,

How can I make a flash filter ( or somthing? )
Or does Nikon make them?

( nikon d200 )

Added (1). What I need is an answer on how to filter it out, so I can get close up shots that aren't "dead" from my flash.

I'm going to start macro photography in january.
