Should I switch to Canon?

I currently have a Nikon d3100 with the kit lens and a 55-200mm lens. I'm looking to upgrade to a Nikon d5100, or a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with a kit lens and a fixed fifty f1.7(i think) lens. Is it worth selling my Nikon equipment? Oh and I usually shoot in low light, so a high ISO with minimal grain is needed. I'm practicing portraiture also.

If you owned these cameras, what were your experiences?

I'm having trouble shooting with a manual 50mm lens, what can i do?

I have a Nikon D40x. And i have a Nikon AF 50mm lens. This lens however, does not AF on my camera because its a D40. Shooting manually usually wouldn't bother me, but i'm having a problem that is really messing me up when i shoot portraits. When i look through the viewfinder, it looks like it is perfectly focused, but once uploaded, they aren't well focused at all. For example, i shot a man, and the hair around his face was perfectly in focus, but his face wasn't. (i shot it at f/4.5)

I'm almost sure it's the camera, because i had borrowed a friends 50 mm (same kind) and i had the same issue. I've tried adjusting the viewfinder, but nothing seems to work.

Is there something that i'm doing wrong, or something that i could try doing?

Added (1). If it is the viewfinder, is this something i can get repaired?

Tamron AF 18-270mm (with VC) or the Sigma 18-250mm for NIKON?

Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO VS Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

Hello everyone… Can anybody tell me which would be a good option: Tamron AF 18-270mm (with VC) or the Sigma 18-250mm for NIKON?
I currently own a Nikon D40x with a nikkor 18-105mm. Please do not suggest a new camera or the lens Nikkor 18-200, I can't afford it at the moment, and I need to upgrade for a trip. Thank you!

Added (1). Yeah.I've had the 18-55mm, 55-200mm etc., … But I'm way too clumsy for that, I take a lot of urban pictures and I find myself in the middle of the crowd trying to switch lenses, filters, and I get dust in the camera etc,… I'm starting to get inclined towards the Tamron, but I heard the AF sucks in low light…

Nikon D90 at 300mm or Megazoom camera at 700mm?

Which option out of the two would give me a better image quality?

1) Nikon D90 + Nikon 55-300mm VR lens. Take an photo at 300mm and crop the image to have the same view as in the next option

2) Sony Hx100V or Canon SX40: Take an image at 700mm without cropping at all.

Thanks

Added (1). Thanks a lot for the answers… I already have an 18-105mm lens. So, the wide end is fine for me until I improve my photographic skills (and my budget), but I also wanted to have a good tele coverage to take pictures of birds. Since I'm an amateur photographer, I won't go for a huge lens.

My nikon d3100 won't open.what do i do? I put it in my back pack but i didn't drop it?

I thought it ran out of battery so I charged it but still it won't open. It's only a month since purchase. I feel miserable… Please help

Added (1). Could it be the battery? The body seems to recognize the battery though, because it blinks green whenever I insert the battery back. I charged it for like 2 and half hours I'm not sure but I took the battery out from the charger when it stopped blinking…

I'm taking two photography classes at my community college. They had me switch to RAW format to take my pictures in. I'm trying to upload them to my computer to do my project but it won't let me look at them, it says unable to see them. But I can look at them on my camera. Not sure if i'm explaining this right. Its my first time using RAW. I have a Nikon D3100. How can I fix this?
