I'm doing my own senior pictures. I need some advice on photo taking and editing?

I'm using a Nikon D40 with a 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Lens for my portraits and I'm wondering how this'll work. Any advice? I'm a beginner at photography and any tips/tricks/advice would help.

Do you have any advice for taking the photos?
Editing them?
Printing them?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm becoming desperate.

I need some camera/photographer's opinions. Professional's opinion to a beginner's?

I have a Nikon D40, currently. I know it's quite cheap and very low quality. I really want to get into Photography. I'm definitely a beginner and I'd need some help. I want to sell my D40 and get a newer and more up-to-date camera that'll really help me with the Photography goal. If anyone can give me any advice, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Also, my upfront question is: is how much could I get for my D40, and which camera would best suit my beginners need for photography. Any lenses with that? I have a budget of approx. $1500. I know it's not all about the camera, but I'll need one to take pictures, right? (:

Again, any advice to a beginner would be amazing. Thanks in advance.

Added (1). I love Nikon and Canon. It doesn't make me any difference whichever you recommend. What are your opinions about that as well?

Nikon D40, Why can't I change the aperature ring?

I have a Nikon D40, I just bought a lens, Nikkor 50mm 1.8D.
The first manual thing is the focus ring, but the ring closest to the body, I can't change it.
I take it off manual and can move it, but then when i go to take a picture, it says i have to put the aperture ring to the minimum aperture (largest/-number)

Why can't I have it on any of the lower numbers?

Is my DSLR (nikon d90) capable of taking Infrared photos?

Hoya R72 is kinda expensive compared to other filters, so I just want to make sure if NIkon d90 is sensitive to infrared.
