What is broken on my lens?

Today someone punched my Nikkor 55-200 non-VR lens. The focus was set to autofocus and was fully extended. There was a cracking noise. When i turned the camera on, it wouldn't autofocus. I put in on manual focus, and the movement was not smooth like it used to be; it locks and jams halfway through and just before being all the way extended or retracted.

and they seem really contended, satisfied - though it lacks that manual focusing override like its predecessor, 70-300 VR FX lens

So what do you say, if we have a DX camera, and don't want to upgrade towards a costly lens, may we dump the 70-300mm and get along with our new 55-300mm VR?
what about the manual focus override? Does this thing really matters?
M mode focusing is not enough precise and crisp at 300mm end, in 55-300mm?
