Best Nikon D3100 lens for portraits?

Are there any inexpensive lenses that have a low f stop number such as in the 1.4 to 2 range that will work for the Nikon D3100?

Ideal lenses would be ones at a focal range of around 50mm.

I would like to take pictures with a shallow depth of field, subjects being either objects or humans.

examples of the kinds of pictures I would like to achieve are as follows:

What is the difference between a focal length of 35mm and 50 mm on a DSLR lens?

Looking at these two lenses:

AF-S DX NIKKOR
35mm f/1.8G

and the

AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D

The aperture on both lenses are the same but I was wondering what the difference in effect will be on the images due to the different focal lengths?

How will each focal length effect the end result?

Added (1). Just to clarify, I'm trying to think which would be the better buy.

Another question I have would be, will having one focal length allow me to achieve what I could with the other by just moving closer or further away from my subject?

Added (2). The camera I plan to use these lenses is the Nikon D3100.

And my purpose for wanting one of these lenses is for a greater depth of field effect.
I feel like the subjects of my pictures will be evenly distributed between objects and people.

For example, I may want to blur the background while taking a close up picture of a flower. Will I be able to achieve this with one of these lenses?
This is what I'm aiming for:

Another example of the type of picture I would want is of a person with a blurred background. For example:

Settings for Nikon D90 Portrait work?

Hi all (:
I have a Nikon D90 I'm learning to use and practice with. I was wondering what some good settings would be if I wanted to shoot a subject outside in sunlight or some shade outdoors.

Thanks!

Added (1). The lens I'm using is an AF Nikkor 24-85mm. I don't think it came in the kit, my grandparents got it for me as a good starter lens. I kind of want to shoot on manual/aperture priority mode as I want to get the best pictures possible. I won't be using a reflector or additional lighting so I realize I will have to position the subject accordingly.

Capturing ultra violet light?

I want to take pictures of flowers in ultra violet light, its for my A level project, I have recently done some research into how insects see flowers and I found that they see them in ultra violet light. The flowers look totally different to how we see them, they are different in colour and have hidden patterns. I really want to know how to capture these images. Would my camera have a setting for this? I have a Nikon D60. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Nikkor 85mm F/1.4D won't autofocus?

I'm not a professional and I don't really know anything about all this. My husband bought me this lens.

I have a Nikon D3000. Will it not work on my model? It also seems like it doesn't zoom… At all. I have to back away really far. It's frustrating me… Help.
