Nikkor 85mm F/1.4D won't autofocus?

I'm not a professional and I don't really know anything about all this. My husband bought me this lens.
I have a Nikon D3000. Will it not work on my model? It also seems like it doesn't zoom… At all. I have to back away really far. It's frustrating me… Help.

Oh dear…
1) PRIME lens. This means you zoom with your feet. This is a lens specifically made for portraits and low light.
2) Your D3000 does not have an internal focus motor, therefore you have to get an AF-S lens with the focus motor built-in to the lens.

Why did you buy a 85 mm lens? Why do you think a prime 85 mm lens would zoom?
Especially since you need an AF-S lens to auto-focus with your entry level D3000
If your plan was to shoot portraits, you needed an AF-S 50 mm f/1.4 lens to shoot head and shoulder shots.
For shooting fashion, you need a lens like a 24-85 mm lens so you can shoot full body, three-quarter and head and shoulder shots of models.
My guess is your husband is not a professional photographer either

The camera and lens are not a true match for each other for one thing. Both Nikon yes, but the camera can't "talk" to the lens.
.
And the 85mm lens is just that, 85mm. There's NO zoom… Fantastic nice lens for some jobs but not a practical one for run of the mill general shooting.
.
Hopefully you can take the lens back and get a refund.
