Why doesn't my raw (NEF) files taken from my Nikon D7000 open in Photoshop Elements 8?

The D7000 is a comparatively new camera and PE8 has already been replaced by PE9.

I would guess that the D7000 is not in the list of supported cameras in your software.

The format might be too new for ACR to open. You need to install the newest Adobe Camera Raw for PE8. At some point, they may have the updated driver for the D7000 in ACR. Or, they will force you to get the latest version or PE.

To open and process NEF files from the D7000 you need ACR version 6.3

Ah, but don't fret. You can convert your NEF files to DNG with the handy (and free) utility DNG Converter that Adobe provides. Use the appropriate download link (Mac or Windows) in the right margin of this link. Convert, open in the Elements 8 ACR and process away!
