Which Nikon is best for a beginner photographer?

I'm looking to buy a new Nikon. I'm still deciding on my price range, but if there's a good one out there under $500 that would be awesome! I would like something with good quality and a fast shutter, as i plan on taking speed pictures. Also, can anyone give me the pros and cons of point and shoot vs. DSLR? So what camera do you have, why do you like it, and would you recommend it? And what would be the best one for me?

How to use the smart portrait mode in my NIKON?

I've got an advanced point and shoot and the manual says that of the smile timer is on, It take the snap automatically. So I just point the camera on my friends smiling face and it just keeps flashing red light(AF assist light) after it's done focusing. It keeps flashing and doesn't take a snap.

Do I have to press the shutter-release button. But the manual says that no button to be pressed it takes the snap automatically.

The subject's face was low-lit(light was low).So could it be the reason?

Replacement for Canon PowerShot A630?

I'm in the market for a new high-end point-and-shoot camera. I love my Canon PowerShot A630, but it's quite old, has slowed down substantially and is need of some repairs. Outweighing the costs, it's cheaper to buy new than get repaired. So I need suggestions!

I want something as similar, but a little bit improved. I still want an articulated screen (I love this feature and use it often) and manual control over functions. If possible I need better stabilization, preferably something that has OK or functional low light capture (A630 is TERRIBLE at this) and is under $500. I'd like to stay with either Canon or Nikon.

Added (1). I photograph mostly architectural/landscape and for memories, but do on occasion photograph sporting events (diving, football and baseball in particular).

Nikon 18-105mm lens? How is it?

So I'm thinking about upgrading from my kit lens to the 18-105. But after reading a LOT of reviews, I found that a lot of people complained about the plastic mount causing the lens to break. Has anybody had experience with this lens, and how do you like it?

Added (1). I used to own the 55-300mm, but it was just too much of a hassle. If you went to do things closer to you you'd have to switch to the 18-55, and then I'd have to switch back again for more zoom. Plus it was TOO heavy! So I sold that lens.

Do i need an extra lens with this camera?

I'm considering buying the Nikon d 7100 camera but i was wondering…

is the default lens that comes with the camera body good enough, or would you recommend buying a separate lens for it?
