Outdoor Portraits with Nikon D90 amateur photography?

Doing a outdoor group and portrait photos for family members. I have been out to the park and looked at the location, and have found a couple of shade spots (as we're doing this around noon) that will be good, but still not at peace with my knowledge with taking portraits.

My question is, what mode other than Automatic or Portrait Mode and what settings (ISO, Aperture, Shutter) is just a safe place or range to stay in when doing outdoor portraits. I'm still very much an amateur so please keep that in mind, and still in the learning process about my Nikon D90.

Working with nikon d90 and 18-105mm lens that come with the camera, and the only other things I have is light reflectors(gold, silver, white) and a remote release, and a tripod.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Views on Sigma 55mm-200mm lens?

And will it AF with the 'Nikon D3100, I've been told it will but just want a second opinion before I buy it! Thanks everyone…

Is it a good buy to build my lens kit up? I'm getting it for a cheap price off a friend… What would such a lens be suitable for? I'm a very new beginner in DSLR photography… Thanks

Better Lens for Nikon D90?

I was looking at the 30mm 1.8, and the 50mm 1.8, and I was wondering any ones opinions on these two lenses. Right now i have the D90, with the kit lens (18-105) and the 70-300 VR. I'm kinda looking for a nice prime walk-around lens that would be good for portraits. Both of these lenses look really nice, just wondering which one would be a better choice.

My Nikon D3000 no longer auto-focuses at all?

A few days ago i attached one of my old Sigma legs for my Nikon N65 film SLR to my D3000. My digital SLR still worked fine and was able to take photos however when I put my digital SLR lens back on my digital camera the auto focus no longer works. Is this because the setting on the camera changed automatically when I changed to an old film lens? If so, how do I return my digital SLR to its original settings that are compatible with the digital lens?

How to clean my NIKOR 18-55mm lens?

I just got my Nikon D3100 a few days ago, and when I took the lens out of the box I noticed some smudges (I guess?) Around the lens in the black area. I don't want to return it, what can I use to clean it that's safe? Here's a picture of what it looks like if that helps any.

I tried wiping it off with a soft towel, but I was afraid to use any water because I didn't know if that would hurt it.

What do the numbers and letters refer to in camera names?

Beginner question, I know. I really want to expand my knowledge of photography, so I thought I would find out the answer to this. I'd prefer no condescending or sarcastic responses, I'm only an amateur wanting to learn. So, my question being, what do all of the numbers and letters mean in camera names? Ex. Nikon D5000, Canon Rebel xsi, etc.etc.
Bonus question, do you prefer Canon or Nikon and why? Compare settings, which ones are superior to the other?
Thanks so much in advance, please write a bit and explain.

Nikon digital cameras and lenses?

Can a nikon lens with an aperture ring be used on a digital nikon camera to control the aperture? I know the lens will work set at the smallest aperture on some, but is there one where you can actually use it?
Also, is there a Nikon that has a button for aperture and shutter speed in manual mode? I have the d5000 and in manual I can't control both, and i don't like the camera choosing, and my aperture ring won't work with it.
