My wife and I received a Nikon D5000 camera.
I always have been curious about photography and seeing some friends photos, the hobby looks fun. I love the outdoors and love taking pictures. We live on Long Island, NY so we live close the ocean and the city. I think I want to photograph crowds, buildings and I do not know what else.
I do not know where to begin. I have only used point and shoots before.
Can anybody suggest some good starting points and other ideas to begin?

How to slow down shutter speed and aperture on my Nikon D3100?
Step by step directions for each, please!

I just moved up to a Nikon D90 from my regular digital camera. It's a really nice camera. My Aunt Grace is getting married on the afternoon of New Year's Eve and her photographer just was in a car accident so she asked me to take her wedding pictures. She will be in the Hotel Pierre in New York and they expect to go down to Times Square at midnight. How do I set my camera so that I can take pictures inside the hotel AND still get good pictures when the ball drops at midnight?

Need a cheap focus lens for Nikon d3000?
I got the Nikon D3000 and I want a focus lens. It can't be over 300 dollars and I don't think my camera is compatible with AF lenses. But it does work with AF-S lenses. I've been looking online everywhere and can't find anything.

Buying Nikon D3100 dSLR from grey market would be fine?
Do Nikon dSLRs break down quickly or in less than 2 years of usage? I mean you won't get 2 years warranty and will get the same camera for a very low price around 5k less if bought from grey market. What would you suggest?

Canon Rebel XS, Canon Rebel T1i, Nikon D3000?
My dad got me a Canon Rebel XS for christmas. I'm 15 and am sort of an amateur photographer. I have had 3 cameras(all P&S). The first my sister broke when she yanked it out of my hands and dropped it. The second I still have but I wanted an upgrade so my mom let me get a new one last January. It is a Nikon S4000.It's a great little camera but it doesn't take action shots worth a darn. I'm an avid Equestrian rider(I ride horses if you don't know what equestrian means). Currently I'm training Hunter/ Jumper( Jumping my horse). I tried to take pics (well my mom took the pics but I had the camera stabilized and set so all she had to do was press the button) but they were always a blur either my horses legs or me and my horse as a whole just a giant blur. It also doesn't take pics at night or in low lighting. I have used my moms old film camera and I took some really nice dew drop pics with it. I got up early in the summer and headed out into the pasture, I also got pics of the horses laying down. I know how to treat a camera so please don't say get a cheap DSLR. My dad asked if this one had all the stuff I needed and if it didn't he would exchange it. It is a Canon Rebel XS Deluxe Kit. Does a Canon rebel take good action hots I know it takes 3 fps but is that good enough? I know mega-pixels don't matter unless you are going to print a pic and enlarger it but Should I go for one with a higher mega-pixels and fps?(it has 10.1) I think one of the cameras I could exchange it with is a Nikon D3000.It has 10 mega-pixels and 3 fps, as well as an ISO range of 100-1600. The Canon rebel XS has an ISO range of 100-1800. I think on other option is The Canon rebel T1i.
Added (1). I checked the specs for a bunch of different cameras awhile back. I'm on the Yearbook Staff at my high school and was looking in to getting a camera for that. My P&S didn't take very good pics at football games or in the gyms so I had to find out what feature was the lighting part and that was it. The Nikon d3000 also has 11 auto focus points and the XS has 7. Not sure about the T1i but I think it has 11.

Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens for Nikon D3000?
Today I just got my Nikon D3000. I want a focus lens for it though but apparently some lenses aren't compatible. Would this lens work? It's a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D Autofocus Lens…
And any reviews or suggestions on cheap ($100-400) focusing lenses if you have any would help a lot!

Nikon D60 auto focus is no longer working?
I have a Nikon D60 and up until today the auto focus will not work unless I'm up close. I have a Nikkor 18-55 lens VR and it is set to A and not M. The flash is on and my pictures will not take anymore.

Nikon D40x vs newer model of dSLR?
I'm looking to venture into the dSLR world and was looking at Nikon. I'm a craigslist shopper and I came across this for 400$. Why should or shouldn't I take this deal?
nikon d40x body with 70-200 and 35 and 20-75 lens
I know this camera is older but since I'm new does it matter?
Added (1). If I should get new what should I get?
