SHUTTER SPEED
-Put the camera in "M"
-Look in view finder
-Turn command dial to the left (the dial is under your right thumb)
-Speed will be listed as whole numbers 250 / 125 / 60 those are fractions of a sec. As you get lower you will see 1" 2" those represent secs.

APERTURE
-Same procedure but you need to hold down the exposure compensation button while you turn the command dial to change aperture. The button is by your shutter release and has a +/- on it.

If you're going to take control of the camera, that's great. I think it's a bit of a waste to leave a DSLR parked in Auto (my opinion only). I strongly recommend you pick up the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. It has all the info you need to get you taking control of that DSLR.

This should all be in your owner's manual - if you don't have it, you can download it here;

If you look at the dial on the top left of the camera you will see 4 letters. P A S M.
A- represents Aperture camera sets shutter
S- represents shutter camera sets aperture

All you got to do is turn the dial to the wanted setting, and there's a thumb wheel on the right side of the camera. All you must do is roll this wheel forward or back and it will change your aperture or shutter.

M- Manual you set both aperture and shutter.

Simple. YOU READ THE USER MANUAL.

Oh by the way - you do not "slow down" the aperture. You increase or decrease the size.
