Photographers Using the Nikon D3100?

Setting long exposure on a Nikon D40?
So I have a Nikon D40, an older model, and I'm lost as to how to get long exposure times. A friend of mine suggested a 30-second exposure for photographing lightning with an ISO of 100. I'm not sure how to get the shutter speed that low. Do I keep cranking the wheel below 0 when I put the camera in shutter priority or manual? Or is this under a separate menu entirely? I have a tripod, so I'm not worried about camera shake.
Will this camera meet the requirements for my class?

Which is the better camera - Canon T3 or Nikon D5000?
I'm currently looking at buying my first DSLR and trying to decide between the Canon T3 or the Nikon D5000. They are both in the same price range. Any photographers out there to advise me?
How to motivate and save my money?
So I'm trying to save up money to by myself the Nikon D3100.It's around 700$. And I'm trying to find ways to save my money to actually buy it. Since I'm 14, I can't get a job in NYC. So please help me! I really want it. Any ideas?
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 or Tokina 100mm f/2.8?
Want to buy my first macro lens for D5100.nikkor lens is way above my budget.heard tamron gives nice shots but the build of tokina is very solid with the same DOF and bokeh. I will be also in potrait with these lens, so AF works in which lens better? I'm more serious on macro and will be on manual so AF factor not a big deal. Please suggest the cost of the lens in indian market.

Canon T3, Nikon D5000, or Nikon D3100?
What is the best dslr camera out of these three Canon T3, Nikon D5000, or Nikon D3100? I know the D3100 and T3 are newer, but I've been told the D5000 has more options then the rest of them. Which would be best for a new photographer?
Added (1). I did consider the 5100 but the price tag is a little more then I was looking for which is why I did not include it.
So we got a Nikon d3000 last year, and I love it! It comes with two lenses; one that zooms in and one for normal photo captures. Inside the camera case is a string-drawn bag to hold one of the lenses in and at the bottom I found something that I think attaches to the camera… It looks like it could attach to the outside of the lens to create shadows or a more direct shot? Or i don't know if its just for storage? Anyways what is it for? Its al black and is round but gets to a bigger circumference the more outward it goes?
Are there any must have accessories for the Nikon D3100? And also if you could Please answer this! I was looking at some other DLSR cameras and they have polorizers; can you get a polarizer for the NIkon D3100!
