Which is the better camera - Canon T3 or Nikon D5000?

I'm currently looking at buying my first DSLR and trying to decide between the Canon T3 or the Nikon D5000. They are both in the same price range. Any photographers out there to advise me?

Try both out at a store and get whichever feels better in your hands - that's really the most important part, whether you find the control layout comfortable and can easily reach all the buttons and so on.

The T3 is a current lower entry level camera, the D5000 is an ageing upper entry level one, meanwhile replaced by the D5100.It's still a capable camera though. Also consider the D3100 (the T3's direct counterpart in Nikon's lineup) or the Pentax Kx.

I say there's no better except as to your skills with such a camera - do you have the skills and knowledge to operate a dslr off anything but full auto? If not learn or save some cash and buy
a point and shoot.

Well D5000 is 2 years older, so T3 has less noise and is smaller, but there's no articulating screen and you can't control video. I'd still get it though…
