Best SLR Camera for a Budget?

I'm looking to buy the best digital SLR camera for my budget. I would like to spend under $600, preferably lower, unless it is truly worth the extra. The shots I want to be getting would mostly be action and sport shots. So I would need a camera with a high number of FPS, but what else would I need to look for in that area?

I enjoy doing macro shots as well, but I suppose that would have more to do with lenses than the camera. I would really prefer a Nikon or a Canon, putting the "Canon v. Nikon" debate aside, they seem to be the most widely accepted and professional cameras within my range. I don't need a beginner's camera; I have a bit of experience and can navigate most technology well.

A friend of mine recommend the Canon XS Rebel, which I'm seriously considering. The only concern I have with it would be the "Error 99" which many people have experienced. This camera will probably not be upgraded for a few years, so I need it to last. Plus I'm pretty clumsy, so I need something well built and sturdy.

Are there any other great cameras which would fit the bill?

Anyone use Sony DSLR's?

I'm in the market for an affordable DSLR. I have one now but with all the pros and cons of all the DSLR's that are more affordable its a tough pick. You find review sites that are partial to Canon, partial to Nikon etc. I've been looking for something small and easy to take with me out in public. I don't like pulling out my main DSLR unless I have to. I've thought of going with a PS but I can't because once you go with a DSLR you don't go back.

I found Sony because a friend of a friend has one of their DSLR's but they're not a photography person so anything to them is "good" that they take. I'm looking at some of their newer models, but our local stores are filled with Canon and Nikon. I've yet to see a Sony on display to try.

If anyone has any experience with Sony (any of the 16mp or higher cameras) let me know what you think.

Please don't recommend a Canon. The only way I'd get a Canon is to drop nearly $8K on the Mark III & I can't do that right now. Specifically I go to a lot of shows for local bands and always like to have a camera handy. I'm not risking my Nikon due to mosh pits, crowd surfers etc and Sony seems to have affordable lenses and flash mounts so I can't complain if gets destroyed.

I'm looking for a decent camera?

I'm trying to find a decent camera, with a decent price (I can't spend more than like 200 on it, and even then that is a lot… ). But i was looking at Nikon and Cannon.

There's a few things i want though:
*no really pixel/grainy pictures
*can handle natural light and artificial light well
*not using AA batteries… I can't stand those, it never lives long
*doesn't blur the picture at the slightest movement
*zoom capabilities that aren't going to blur the picture…

The current camera i have now is a Casio Exilim, it works fine for simplistic pictures or youtube videos, but everything else it simply hates (aka: does all the above things - except has a chargeable battery <3)

any help would be great: D

What's your favorite camera brand?

I'm not talking about P&S cams or DSLR cams, I'm just talking about cameras in general. Personally, I like Leica, but they're expensive. Other than that, it's Nikon.
