Hockey Photos on Nikon D40?

I'm going to take photos at the Xcel Energy Center of the Minnesota Wild hockey team for a high school journalism photography contest. I have a Nikon D40 and wondering what lens would be best, and what my settings should be at. I have a small 18-200mm lens, and may be hoping to get a larger one. Does anyone have suggestions on a lens and settings?

Is there something wrong with my Nikon D3100 auto-focus?

Hi, so about 3-4 weeks ago, my friend was sitting on the floor and she picked up the lens to my Nikon D3100 (separate from camera) and dropped it. It did not fall too far and just the lens filter was shattered. I took it to the camera store that I bought it from and they said it looked like everything was just fine and that I just needed to buy a new filter. Fast forward to NOW and the auto-focus can't seemed to come into focus and keeps on making the little noises and adjusting but has lot's of trouble coming into focus and usually makes it OUT of focus. I'm not sure if it was like this before but I don't think it was as bad. Do you think this is because of the lens being dropped or is the auto-focus not that great on some Nikon's?

What kind of camera would be wise for a photojournalist traveling through Eastern Europe?

I'm an aspiring photojournalist who will be leaving for Eastern Europe shortly. I have been warned by Eastern European locals not to bring my Nikon D90 in public as it will be stolen, or I'll be targeted. I was considering getting a film camera that might not stick out as much. What kind of camera are the professional photojournalists using in high-risk places?

What's the optimum lens for portraiture photography?

I have heard that its good to use a lens with more than 100mm for portraiture. But won't that need a large studio?
How about Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8? I'm currently having a Nikon D3000.

Added (1). I don't have space to do buy longer mm lens, but if I have to avoid distortion using 35mm, will it be effective if i shoot from far, but crop the photo later?

Problem with Nikon D5000 auto-focus?

I went to use my Nikon D5000 today, and it would not auto-focus. For the life of me, I couldn't figure it out. I went through all of the camera settings to make sure there was nothing there that would cause this, and made sure the lens itself was set to auto. Everything is as it should be but the camera still won't auto-focus. I tried all of my lenses and have the same problem with all of them.

It will take pictures just fine, either blurry or with the manual focusing.

Any suggestions? Any ideas as to what could have caused this?
