Entry level DSLR? Surely not

So, as I said yesterday, my Olympus sp800 has lost its focus after only a few months, and I'm now looking to exchange it for something decent. After looking around yesterday and today I'm torn between the: Nikon D3100 and Canon 1100d, obviously I'm still learning but I want a camera that is relatively cheap and that I will still be using in a few years. The camera's seem to be similar but I just don't know which one will be a "better" buy. Any thoughts?

Help shooting low light with my Nikon D40? Can't make it work

I have a Nikon D40-with a Nikon Dx 55-200mm lense. I'm shooting a wedding this weekend and I was just informed that it will be in a very low light setting. I have tried and tried to adjust my ISO on all settings to shoot these pics but when I adjust it-I can't make the shot-it just won't shoot. I push the button and nothing happens-what am I doing wrong? I'm a novice but am trying to learn-this is just a friends wedding, very informal and small but I want to do my best. ANY help would be appreciated!

Nikon/camera experts? Lens

I'm a photographer for the yearbook and I'm assigned a lot of sports to take pictures of. I have a Nikon D5000 and the lens it came with: a Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR. One of the sports I'm assigned to is football. I need a lens with more zoom capability. What do you recommend? If you could include a price range with your suggestion, I'd really appreciate it.

Pardon my ignorance, but is 18-55mm a wide angle lens?

Is this a wide angle lens or not? It comes with my nikon D3100. And also can I buy lenses from another maker that will be compatible with my Nikon, since it calls out for a VR lens for auto focusing? And lastly… Is there a lens that covers very near focusing and far away items as well perhaps up to 200mm or 300 mm?
