Need some general advice for a formal indoor portrait with basic equipment?

I'm getting ready to turn in my final project for this photography course. I have to take an indoor formal portrait of a young girl. It's a fake job for an actress who wants a headshot for her portfolio. The guidelines for the project says that I can use supplement lighting as simple as a table lamp.
I'm working with a Nikon D3100 18-55mm. I have one room with great window light. The photo can be in black and white so I can use household lighting without the worry of WB. Here is the model I'm using, this photo was for a previous informal outdoor nature portrait and I got 100% on it

So I'm just looking for some general tips, advice, things to look out for etc.
1.best way to get soft portrait lighting without studio equipment
2. Certain poses/unattractive flaws to avoid
3. Any particular part of a room to set up?

Some things I have learned to apply: Higher camera angle, a lamp lighting the edge of her hair, some fill light, but not totally absence of flattering shadows to highlight the contours of her face.

I'm sorry if this question is all over the place and badly written, I'm utterly exhausted!

What camera equipment and/or accessories do I need to take pictures at a small event?

I have a Nikon D3000. I received it as a gift since I have always had an interest in photography. Some of my parents' friends ask me to occasionally take some pictures at events, nothing major but now, I was recently asked to be the official, and only, photographer at an event, bigger than I'm used to but still nothing major. I want to know what accessories are "must-haves" and which I could do without, that way I can buy only what I really need.

Should the batteries in my flash gun get hot?

It was a Canon Speedlite 270Ex on a Nikon D5100 with a Battery grip. I don't leave batteries in my flash gun so i got 2 fresh Duracell batteries from a pack and put them in the flash. I used my camera and flash for about 20 shots… I was putting my flash away and the flash and batteries were hot… (this was about 10seconds - 1 minute after use)

Batteries for a camera?

Hi

Does anyone know if there's such a thing that you can place under your DSLR and it gives you a lot more battery than the normal small batteries? I think that a few months ago I looked at something that looked like a big battery and it was places under the DSLR where you would normally connect to a tripod but i'm really not sure if it was that… If anyone knows what it's called or if anyone can correct me that would be great. I need it for this winter trip and i'm planning on making a film

I have a Nikon D90 if that helps

How many camera batteries do you need for a wedding?

Nikon D3000 camera batteries. If you have 3 fully charged batteries will they last from 8am-10pm the same day?

Also if you have four 2GB sd cards, two 8GB sd cards and one 4GB memory card… Will those be enough to shoot in raw format the whole time?

Understanding Nikkor Lenses?

I'll be buying the Nikon D5100 but am a bit worried about the lenses
Let's say I wanted to buy a new lens later on, would any nikkor lens fit perfectly?
What if I wanted to buy a 75-300 f/4 which must be gigantic. Would it fit?

I'd appreciate if someone professional could explain further about lenses' dimensions.

Added (1). Awesome! Very helpful. What about the filters? I see there are 52mm and larger diameters also. What does this value depend on?
