Best SLR camera (UK)?

Hi, I'm looking to buy an SLR camera, this is the first time I've baught one myself, but have used friends cameras. I have been looking at the Nikon D5000 (can be baught in a package deal with the 18-55mm VR Lens for £464) Is this a good camera to go for. I have been told nikons are the best, there certainly seems a big price difference between this and the other one I looked at, the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS Digital Camera for £379!

I'd use the camera for the simple use of high quality photos, absract photography I'm interested in and I'm also looking to take part in a photography course in my spare time. Is this camera more for professionals? The nikon looks pretty user friendly but is it worth paying that much for a few extra gadgets that I may not even use? Would you recommend any other cameras?

Nikon D90 + Sigma EF-500 DG Super. Camera settings blank?

I just got a new flash, and for some reason if i put the flash on the TTL setting the top camera screen goes blank - the apperture and the shutter speed disappear… What am i doing wrong?

Added (1). The 'Flash Mode' Square symbol thing flashes… And also if i switch on the back screen of the camera to see settings it has the flash mode box flashing… With TTL inside to the right of it… There must be a way to fix this…

How to take good night photos with a subject?

I use Nikon d90
Tonight I'm taking night photos where there will be ambient light eg lamposts etc.
My friend is modelling for me

How do I take good night photos where there's a good balance between the subject and the lighting in the background? What settings on my DSLR should I use to ensure the background will not be too dark?

I was thinking about using rear-curtain flash but i don't know if that will be a good idea. Can someone please give me some settings i can use eg. ISO 800 etc. Thanks.

I have the kit lens and i'm not planning to use any light equipment cos i don't have any.

What setting did the photographer use to take night photos like this?

I have nikon d90 with the kit lens
i'm taking photos of my friend at night where will be ambient light.

What settings should I use so there's a good balance between ambient light in the background and the focus on the model? I don't want to use the wrong settings so the background is too dark.

Is there a Nikon camera like the Cannon 7D?

I love Nikon and I already have a D60, I'm minoring in photography and its a hobby/side job for me. I've seen pictures taken with the Cannon 7D and they are really interesting so I was just wondering if there was a comparable camera by Nikon?

What's the difference between all the newer Nikon Cameras (D40, D40x, SLR, D3000)?

I'm looking to buy one of the Nikon D series cameras but I don't know what the difference is between them. I was looking at the ones that are in the $400-$800 range such as the D40s, 80s and specifically the 3000. What do they all mean. What is the difference and what does SLR mean? Can someone help me out here and simplify this stuff. And no I don't need a less advanced camera I'm learning slowly but surely I just need help here right quick.
