I need some advise on buying a semi-professional digital Camera?

I'm interested in pursuing professional photography but i don't have that kind of money to splurge on a professional camera just yet. I want something that will last and has everything I would need. I'm interested in photographing people.id like something that i could do close face shots with… And something with a good zoom as well…

Any suggestions?
I don't know where to begin… There are so many brands and models out there… Nikon? Cannon?

ps I want to invest in something good.

Which lens is worth investing into for nikon?

I'm stuck between the nikon 24-70 2.8 and the nikon 24-85 2.8. Are they both the same? Or does one give off better quality. I want to use them for taking photos in dark places like when a band is playing and stuff like that. Please give all the information in your head and pour it out here.

Suggestions for an entry level DSLR camera?

I'm looking into buying my first proffessional digital camera, i'm looking for an entry level dslr. I'm an artist, but i'm looking into photography and would mostly use it for creative photography.
Seems like the big competitors are Canon and Nikon.
I've been reading reviews and compareing cameras, it seems to me that the nikon takes a sharper picture compared to the canon.
Also "camera" is a whole other language that i don't really understand.
If you have any knowledge on cameras:
What a good one to get?
Anything i should look for when choosing a camera?

I'm trying to stay in the 500-800 dollar range.

Are GE Cameras any good?

I'm thinking about purchasing a GE X500 Power Pro Series Digital Camera, but I'm hesitant because I don't know anything about GE cameras. It's main allure for me is the price, only $149. I've heard that you should only buy cameras from people who have been making them for a long time, ie nikon and canon, but I'm not the financial position to drop half a grand, if not more, on a camera. So I'm basically looking for reviews, advice, opinions, anything that could help me with my decision.

Photography cameras. Which one?

I have done some photography in the past but I just use regular cameras. I really want a good photography camera. Nikon or Canon or Sony. Many people say Canon is better or Nikon is.
My budget is somewhere less than a thousand dollars, but if its a good camera i will go buy it for a higher price. I just need a Really GOOD photography camera.
I don't know which one to buy, so many options.

Holga HL-N or Diana F+ Lens Adaptor?

I have a Nikon DSLR, and enjoy the retro look of holga/lomography. As I was looking at these two lens/lens adaptors, i was having trouble deciding which one to get.
Both are very inexpensive:
HL-N (Holga) = $25
Diana F+ Lens Adaptor = $12 (the lenses are approx. $30-$40)

Which do you think i should get?
