How to make the pictures less bright on my 50mm 1.8 lens?

This is a totally noobie photography question.

I've just bought a Nikon 50mm 1.8AF lens - and am using it manual focus with my D3100 - not having any problems focusing using the rangefinder etc - my issue is that all my photographs are coming out way to bright!

Have tried adjusting the aperture, which doesn't seem to be making much difference - am I doing something wrong? Any tips?

Added (1). Thank you, both brilliant bits of advice! Will do some more reading and experimenting, and have ordered a filter.

How to control video settings on a DSLR? (nikon)?

I shoot videos with my Nikon D5000, and i was wondering why my video changes like the white balance and sometimes it flickers bright to dark. And it ruins my videos. How can i control that and leave it as one setting? How can i control other settings such as shutter speed and stuff during video so that i can manually change it and not automatic?

ps. Can someone explain to me what shutter speed and white balance does to video?

I can't deside what DSLR to get

A Canon Rebel t2i with a 18-55 m lens.

A Canon Rebel t2i Body with a 50mm f/1.8 II Lens.

Nikon D3100 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Nikkor Lens

Which one's the best for a beginner? If none, which one should I get?

Nikon D3100, Canon T1i, or Canon T2i?

Even the smallest things matter.

How to produce photos like these?

I want to take close-up photos of insects like these:

I have a nikon D3100 camera and a Nikon 60 mm macro lens, but I can't get extreme close ups of insects. What would be best to do to get photos like these with my current lens, because I don't want to spend money on a whole new lens? I don't think that extension tubes will work well because my minimum focus distance is already about 20 cm and any closer will block the light and scare the insects away.

Also what Nikon lens would take photos like these?

Shall i get a nikon d90 18-105 or canon 600d 18-55?

Hi, i'm kinda torn between which camera i should go for, i can get the d90 a lot cheaper and is apparently better but its a couple of years old now and if i have it for a couple of years would it still be a good camera or really outdated? The canon's much newer so i know i'm getting newer technology but?

How to take photos on my DSLR where I'm in them twice?

I wanna know how people take pictures where like a figure of them is looking one way, and it is faded, then another snapshot figure of them is facing another direction doing something us, less faded than the first one and so on. What do you even call this? And how do you do it on a DSLR? Or Nikon D3000?

Wide Angle Lens for Nikon d5100, any suggestions?

I'm really hoping the photography community can help me out. I've decided to invest in a Nikon d5100, but I'm really into architectural photography and landscapes. I've heard that a wide angle would really help capture all the scenery. I just don't know that much about lens… And I'm still confused, what's an af or dx? What's a mounting type? I would truly appreciate all the great help.

Got some Nikon D5000 doubts and queries?

I have a new Nikon D5000 and i forgot my battery charger back home and i'm on a holiday now. I went to a shop and asked for the charger. After that i did the stupidest thing ever by giving the lady my camera battery. She took it somewhere inside and brought "it" back with the charger for the battery. Now the charger doesn't blink while charging like an ordinary charger does but it charges the battery. Also, the battery drains out pretty fast. I wanted to know if I'm using a duplicate battery or something like that and will it have very bad effects on the camera.
Also, I wanted some tips on taking care of the camera!
