What are the best lenses for concert photography on a Canon?

Any advice on this would be welcome. I recently switched allegiance from Nikon to Canon and am looking to expand my photography into music venues but not really sure what exactly I'm looking for in a lens. All price brackets are welcomed and I'm speaking mainly about shooting front of stage without flash although tips for a little more distance are welcomed too.

Many thanks,

Philip

Added (1). Thanks KawKaw, there are some great shots there. Were they all taken on a D90? Was it a Nikon equivalent lens to the Canon 70-200mm?

Nikon d3100 good purchase?

Nikon d3100 a good purchase?

Hi,

I've just took the plunge and bought my first digital slr, the Nikon d3100.It cam with the standard kit lens. £400.Is this great value. I know megapixels are far from everything but at much cheaper prices there a compacts with many more than the 14.2 of the d3100
Will this camera become quickly outdated or be a good product for years to come?

Also can somebody explain what sort of settings are best for taking portrait photos at night with a lot in background.Ie sky line or stadium, building etc? Exposure shutter speed etc.plus how do you keep the person in focus as well as background? I'm aware there's no magic button but please little advice on whether I'd is achievable relatively easily and often how?

Nikon 24-120mm f4 or 16-85mm on D5100?

HI, I've been photographing with my new DSLR for a few months. I have a D5100 and was wondering which lens is better. I know the 24-120mm is a lot more but price isn't a concern. I know the 16-85mm is an FX lens and the D5100 is a DX body. Which one is better overall in terms of picture quality and build quality.

Added (1). Yea, 16-85mm is a DX lens, typo

I'm buying my first camera? A little help? Advice?

So i'm a beginner when it comes to cameras, and i wanted to get a Nikon D3100 to begin with, although i came across the Nikon D5100 which has more effects - selective colour etc. However this camera is a bit more pricey. Which do you think i should get? I have never owned a DSL camera before, another question - Would it be alright if i bought it off ebay? They have companys that sell cameras with lenses, filters, bags and other things. Would this be better than paying the extra $400 at a shop?

any advice is much appreciated.

How to take senior pictures?

A friend of mine has asked me to take her senior pictures for her. I do photography as a hobby mostly and she really likes the way I take photos and editing them. Since this is the first time someone has asked me to take photos for them, I'm a little nervous on how it's going to turn out. I own a Nikon D3000 with both 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm lens. I need some tips and guidance on how to take great senior pictures.

Photography assignment suggestions/opinions/tips

I recently started a Digital Photography course at a community college and need a little help with an assignment (no worries, I'm not looking to cheat or anything, I'm just a little confused.). Here's the assignment:

1) Find a scene with a wide range of values (very bright to deep shadows).Take 5 shots that are exactly the same of that scene (if you have a tripod, use it), the only difference for each shot will be that you will change the exposure:
- Normal exposure (0.0)
- Overexposed 1 stop (+1.0) and 2 stops (+2)
- Underexposed 1 stop (-1.) and 2 stops (-2)

2) Take an image where you freeze motion and another one where you blur motion (2 exposures).
You may use Shutter Priority, choosing a fast shutter speed (1/500) or a slow shutter speed (1/30)

3) Take an image where you have a "shallow" depth of field (aperture setting) and another with maximum depth of field. You may use Aperture Priority, setting a small aperture (f/122) or a large aperture (f/2.4)

For the first part of the assignment, I get the part about changing the exposure and that stuff, I'm just not sure what type of photo and/or scene would have "a wide range of values", as she (my professor) puts it. I have tried photographing the shadow of a bench with a lot of slats, and a brick wall kinda split in half by a shadow, but I feel like these aren't what she wants. They seem too simple to have a "wide range" of values. If you could let me know what you think my teacher means, give an example of a photo with a wide range of values, or help in any way you can, it would be really appreciated.

I understand part 2, I just don't know how to get what I want. I already have the frozen motion picture that I want, but I don't yet have the blurred motion photograph. My idea for blurred motion is to photograph some insect trails around the streetlamp across from my house tonight. Here's the problem: I tried to get this type of shot last night with my Nikon D3100, but it didn't catch any trails of the bugs in the picture. I tried a shutter speed everywhere from 1/12 of a second to 30 seconds, but none of them worked. So the question is, what setting do I use on my Nikon to get insect trails?

This assignment is due this Tuesday (August 30), so, I'd love it if you could help me in any way.

Camera setting for football game?

Tonight I'm shooting my first football game. And of course it will be nighttime with only a few lights from the field. I'm currently shooting with my Nikon D3000 and my 18-35mm lens. I not that fluent in shooting manual so could someone possibly recommend to me what setting I should have my camera on?
