I just got a strobe/trigger lighting kit and it came with the remote trigger, and I can't find the adapter cable that would work for my Nikon D90… Can you help?

Which external flash unit is suggested for amateur DSLR user?
I have a Nikon D5100 and often use it with my 35mm f/1.8 lens, but when I use my kit lens for certain situations, the built-in flash is too harsh and bright. Which external flash would you suggest?
Opinion on new Nikon Equipment?
In ten weeks time I'm looking to buy a new camera for my eighteenth, I was planning on getting the Nikon D5100 with its standard lens and get a 50mm lens on top of that with potentially the wide angle attachment.
I currently have a Nikon D40 with a 70 - 300mm Sigma lens.
When I turn eighteen I've been offered some nightclub photography and band promo shoots.

Sorry, I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to cameras. I have a Nikon D40 at the moment but I want to upgrade very soon (something not over the top expensive but still delivers excellent performance and image quality). I'm trying to get into some amateur photography. Any suggestions? Thanks for all answers!
Added (1). I like fashion/wedding photography and I know the D40 is good but I want something with clearer images.
Found 3 bodies dirt cheap on CL.
Nikon: a d70s, a d40, and a d60.
Looking to purchase as a first dslr so i don't need nothing real fancy. Just for good family portraits & scrapbooking.
So of the three, which do you recommend? None of the bodies are over 250, and two come with the stock lense.
