Slr camera settings for lightbox shooting?

Why won't the self timer on my Nikon D3000 work?
I had the camera for about a month and it was working fine until I turned it on last week. I tried pressing the "FN" button to set it on self timer and the screen just turns black until I let go of the button. It hasn't done that before. The only way it works is if I set the command dial to GUIDE then set it to self timer then it would work. But I want to use it with other commands. What's going on?

What monopod would be good for my Nikon D3100?
My family and I are going on vacation in a few weeks to Glacier Park. My mom told me she would buy me a monopod before we went. I want one that is lightweight and not bulky. One that can do vertical and horizontal photos. If I remember correctly, my camera has an 18-35 mm lens and a 55-200 mm lens. It needs to be able to hold the weight of my camera and lens. I want a monopod that can function well outdoors (waterproof would be cool, if possible, so I could stick it in a stream or something to get closer to my subject). It needs to be able to swivel, preferably. And it needs to be around $50 (no less than 30, no more than 70).
If there was a monopod built specifically for my camera that fits these requirements, that would be fantastic. I know that's unlikely, though, so any suggestions are welcome.

Is it better to buy Nikon 18-200mm and Nikon 70-300mm or just Nikon 28-300mm?
Nikon 18-200mm + Nikon 70-300mm is a bit cheaper than 28-300 alone but i would say that the first option is better, what do you think? I'm using nikon d7000
Added (1). Lol i know which one is for and there spec that's why i narrowed down my choice to just these 3 but i'm asking if anybody used 28-300 so he could tell me about the quality and how it compares to this combo
Added (2). Listen i wanted to buy 18-70mm lens along with 70-300mm lens so i i will have a range from 18-300mm in 2 lens better than just one in terms of quality, but i've read the review about 18-70mm and found out that 18-200mm is better (image quality) and that they are about the same price so i decided to buy 18-200 instead of 18-70 so i'm just asking if 18-300 mm range in 2 lens package is better than 28-300mm
in just 1 lens i know that when covering those big ranges it is better to have 2 lens covering them rather than just 1 but i'm interested for the quality of 28-300mm

I own nikon D5100. I own 18-55 kit lens & just bought a 55-300 VR?
Now I want to add a prime lens. 50mm 1.8 or 35 mm 1.8. My main aim to get reasonable tight shot (with some surrounding but not too much) of my family on vacation. Will be basically using is outdoors. Taking the distortion and ideal distance from the subjects in consideration what will be the best lens for me. I tried taking some pictures at 35 & 50mm from my kit lens in my house buy still can't decide which will really be the best lens for outdoor family photograpgy on vacations.
Added (1). If I'm on a 50mm Lens and shooting a group of 3-4 people, what should the distance between the subject and camera be?
