The D3100 can use any AF-S or manual focus Nikon lens, with some exceptions.

AF lenses will not work in autofocus, but they will allow you to manually focus them. For autofocus, they require a motor in the body which is not included in the D3100.

Some older wide-angle lenses designed to be used in mirror-lockup mode will not work on the D3100, and mounting these lenses could damage the lens, camera, or both.

The Wikipedia article has a link to the list you're looking for.

The Nikkors you need are AF-S, third-party lenses must have a motor (Sigma call theirs HSM).

The type of Lens compatible with Nikon Digital cameras is the F mount.
Thats all you need to look for when shopping for new lenses for your 3100.

Just make sure they're "F mount"

Your manual has a compatibility list for your camera.

Basically it will fit just about every Nikon lens ever made for the F mount (i.e.other than the new Nikon 1 lenses).

However, only lenses that are AF-S will autofocus on your camera.
