Difference between Nikkor VRI and Tamron 70-200 2.8 lens?

I'm trying to decide between the two. I can't afford the Nikkor VRII, so I'm looking into the earlier model vs. The Tamron. I read that the Tamron is significantly slower, which is a bummer. Can you give me your suggestions between the two lenses?

Confusing letters and abbreviations, what do they mean?

~~ Nikon 50mm f1.8D AF Nikkor lens ~~ VS ~~ Nikon 50mm f1.8G AF-S Nikkor lens ~~

What is the difference between these two lenses? I know the AF stands for autofocus. But what on earth does nikkor mean? And what is the difference between the "D" and the "G" after the aperture… Also what's the additional "S" for?

Is my camera lens any good?

Someone I know, a while ago, gave me a lens they had found. It's for film SLR's. It's a Nikon Nikkor 50 mm and appears to be for manual focus. All it says on the opening of the lens is "Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1:18 4183657" and I really don't know what any of this means. It looks oldschool with red, yellow, blue and white numbers, black hard body and a metallic ring encompassing the middle.

Added (1). Yeah, it works fine. I included some pictures.

Added (2). I just don't know if the quality of a picture would be good, at least in theory, based on the numbers.

What lenses would be best for this situation?

I have the nikond5100 with the VR AF-S 18-55 kit lens.
I think I want a telephoto.
I was wondering if a brand other than nikkor fits nikon cameras.
If I get one without the VR would that be ok as I mainly wish to shoot some horse shows (quick moving and jumping horses) and perhaps some nature/architecture shots from traveling?
I don't have a very high budget so what lenses would fit these types of shots better than the kit lens without breaking the banks? (The cheaper the better although I don't want something so cheap that its not worth having, if you know what I mean.)

Added (1). Oh, those would both be in my price range.

Is a 70-200mm lens suitable for?

I just bought a second hand Nikon 70-200mm VR lens but have since realised a fault with it & am returning it. After a bit of research I decided this would accompany my 12-24mm Nikkor nicely for wedding photography along with my 50mm 1.4G. However, looking at new lenses I've noticed the 85mm prime & the 24-70mm & am wondering if these might be better suited for those shots I'll be taking from the back of the church, out of everybody's way.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have (I live about 10 minutes away from WarehouseExpress (WEX) so they're my primary source for all my camera goodies, seeing as eBay sellers can't always be trusted.)

Added (1). If any of you are on Facebook & have your work available to view I'd love to see some of it. My email address is J. Bales@live.com if anybody wishes to share their work or even email me a link to their site.
