If you don't mind manually focusing it. The lens you need is the AF-S 70-300 mm lens. It covers the same angles of view that the lens you listed, but will auto-focus on your entry level dSLR

You can forget about any 4.3x. That is a term used only with P&S cameras. Why isn't it important?

Because it tells you nothing. I have two 2x lenses. One is an extreme wide angle 12-24 mm zoom lens and the other is a 200-400 mm long telephoto zoom lens. As you can see, both are 2x zoom lenses but just knowing that tells you nothing

Now that you are using a dSLR, forget about optical zoom ranges and learn what various focal length lenses can do for you.

The lens will work in the sense you can take a photo with it, but the autofocus will not work.

The good thing about Nikon is their lenses. Any Nikon lenses can usually be paired with any nikon camera. So I would recommend getting a nikon lenses and i must say they are Beautiful lenses.

Yes but it won't auto focus because Nikon decided to not put a focusing motor in the camera body. That makes you have to buy the more expensive Nikon AF-S lenses if you want the lens to auto focus on your D3100.

Your D3100 does not have an AF motor, so the lens you are looking at needs to have AF-S. There's one 70-300mm with it, but not the one you listed. And stating 4.3x, the zoom range, is really useless as we're talking about DSLR lenses.
