Nikon D300s and glass for Canon EOS 5D and glass?

So I'm going through something of a crisis - I've had the thought that I might like to trade my D300s and 17-35 f/2.8 (genuine Nikon) for a Canon rig with similar glass. I recently saw a forum post offering a 5D classic and 16-35 (and a bunch of other bodies and lenses) for Nikon gear. I'd lose a bit of money if I were to do this trade, but I might be more satisfied with the FF Canon. Yeah, they don't really compare - the D300s and the 5D are on different planes, but do you think it would be a good trade for me? I mean, the least expensive (and moderately OK) Nikon is the D700 (whose successor should be coming within the next couple of years). And its $2500…

These questions are impossible to answer without knowing why you want to do that. What is that D300s not bringing you?

Yeah… What is the D300s not doing for you? You may be having exaggerated expectations.
The price of the D700 likely will drop once the D800 is available. Likely a matter of a few months.
If you call the D700 "moderately ok", then i don't see how you possibly could be happy with a 5Dmk1. The D700 is on par with the 5Dmk2 (albeit aiming at a somewhat different type of photography) and thus blows the 5Dmk1 out of the water. If that's just "moderately ok" to you, then you won't be happy with a 5Dmk1 either. The D700 can do everything a 5Dmk1 can do, but many of those things significantly better.

(Not that this comparison includes the 5Dmk2, not mk1, as the latter is not available as a choice on dxomark)

You seem to be very familiar with both cameras, specs, price and all and it really shows your heart is into Canon. I say do whatever makes you happy.
