Nikon D1500, Canon EOS 600D, or Canon EOS Rebel t3i?

I'm ready to upgrade my camera but I'm not sure which one to pick. I've never owned a Nikon. Are they really that much better than Canon or is it just the "hype."

The EOS 600D and Rebel T3i are exactly the same camera, only one is the model name for the US (T3i) and the other for the rest of the world. I imagine you're talking about the Nikon D5100 and not the D1500, since the D5100 is a direct competitor to the Canon T3i. In any case, it all depends on your preferences, both cameras have their pros and cons. To make the story short: I've been asking myself the same question and after a lot of research, I've decided to go with the Canon T3i. Although if you're not in a hurry and can wait a couple of weeks, Canon and Nikon will both be unveiling new DSLR cameras at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week, so it may be worth waiting to see what's new.

On the other hand, if you;re in a hurry, go for the T3i and you won;t be disappointed.

Hype - yes. Comparing model to model from Canon and Nikon there's virtually no difference. These two companies have been competing with one another for decades and their gear, model for model is very similar.

What suits you and the results you want is what matters. I chose the Canon system because I'm first a fan of the company and second because I know of their attention to detail, quality and longevity.
I own two of the Canon Rebel cameras and they're both excellent. Others prefer Nikon and that's just fine. Get the point? What suits you is what matters.

There's hype only in the head of the buyer. Both Canon and Nikon have pro and cons.

Both have good lens and bad lens.

The Canon 600D has a smaller sensor (not by far) and got 18mp while the Nikon D5100 have 16mp. More mp = more noise but it also mean more details in the picture, because the 18mp are smaller than the 16mp of the Nikon.

Nikon D5100 come without a built in AF motor, so if you want to buy a 85mm 1.8D lens, the AF won't work with the D5100, it would with the D7000.

Movie recording with Canon will provide you the ability to shoot at higher fps than the Nikon, 50fps & 60fps against 30 fps for the Nikon.

The Canon 600D auto focus got 9 points against 11 for the Nikon D5100 (not much difference).

Other than that they pretty much do the same. Combine one of these with a good lens and you will get sharp result.
