Remote not working for Nikon D70. Any ideas?

I've got a standard ML-L3 remote for my D70, which I have used for years without issue. It stopped working, so I replaced the battery. No dice. Just received a new remote and it doesn't work, either.

I'm probably stuck with taking it to a shop, but are there any thoughts as to why the camera is no longer responding?

Yes, I've ensured the camera was set for the remote.

Take your camera and remote to a camera repair shop

They will help you determine why your camera has stopped responding to the remote

Unfortunately you have narrowed it down to the most expensive part.

I've had a D70 since 2005 or thereabouts. Apart from knocking the tripod over a few times and damaging the lens once it has been very robust. About three years ago I go a Foto&Tech remote. Remote has always been flaky, especially the first few shots - very hit and miss. A couple of days ago it failed to work at all despite all the usual tricks to get it to do so. Battery in the remote is new, tried a 'learn' sequence with a universal remote and it accepted it, so it appeared the remote was fine. Ordered a genuine Nikon ML-L3 and it worked first time off the bat, no finessing, no multiple attempts holding it like a contortionist - just plain worked. Wow!
