Nikon SLR Cameras

I just bought a Nikon D70 (not a d70s) and a remote?

I can't figure out how to get the camera into Bulb mode…
I can get it to 30 second exposure mode, but there's nothing past 30 seconds in shutter priority mode… Where is (B)? I need to be able to take 15-20 minute exposures in almost total darkness… Thanks.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't set the shutter to bulb when you're in shutter priority mode. Try it in manual mode and see if it works. That's how it is with my Canons at any rate.

According to some postings in photo.net:
I have the camera in Manuel Mode also custom settin in #21 is set to 1/60. The shutter settings seem to be working ok in P&A modew but will not go above 1/30 in S&M in M mode it reads bulb if you try to go above 1/30. I was hoping there's a setting to turn off the bulb feature? Ernie…
Ernie, Bulb comes after 30 seconds (not 1/30th).it sounds like this was your problem. In Aperture or Program modes, you won't be able to go lower than a certain shutter speed, which I think it selected in the custom menu but it typically 1/60th.

Now I think about it, it makes complete sense that you can use bulb only in manual mode - Say, if you're in shutter priority, the camera has to decide the aperture. However, if you can set it to bulb, you are not telling the camera the shutter speed, the camera then has no way to decide the right aperture.

BTW, are you doing astrophotography with 15-20 minute exposure? I found this link has someone's personal experience on using D-70 bulb mode in the context of doing astrophotography. Couple interesting things he mentioned a) you can use a plam in place of the remote, b) the PC phot capture software does not support bulb mode (what a bumper)

On page 82, "bulb" setting can only be set in Manual mode.

Also, note that if you switch from Manual mode to any other mode and leave the shutter on bulb, the shutter-speed display will flash and the shutter can't be released. Rotate the main command dial to select a different shutter speed before shooting.

You need to be in Manual to get 'bulb' mode - S mode does, indeed, only go up to 30 secs. Just scroll the thumbwheel past 30 secs (in M) & it'll be there!

Edit: exposures of the length of 15-20mins will cause the sensor to warm up which will lead to noise in the image. I don't know if your D70 has Long Exposure Nosie Reduction (LENR) - if it does, you'll need it ON. It will then take a second exposure for the same length of time as the first, only with the mirror down (ie a 'dark' frame). It then processes this in camera to remove any noise from the image. This can take up a fair bit of battery power, since your exposure time is doubled.
If you don't have LENR, then you have to take a dark frame manually (with the lens cap on) and subtract the image using post processing software.

If you're intending to shoot star trails, then consider using 30 sec exposures for as long as necessary, then stacking them. You won't need LENR for this.
