Any DSLR should be OK as a first camera.

A good camera is only the beginning.
Now you need to learn how to get the best results out of it,
which will take considerable time and effort.

Just know that No One is likely to be a naturally good photographer,
although some do have a talent for it and learn faster than others.

My own pictures generally suck because I haven't learned or practiced anywhere near enough.

The D70 was a good camera in its day and still is a good camera. You can take beautiful images with that body if you have the skills to produce beautiful images. The D70 is considered ancient by today's standards, however, it is still capable of taking pretty darn good images. The main thing it lacks is low noise at higher ISO settings. If you use the camera at ISO 800, or lower, it will give you clean images. I still use my D40 (same sensor as the D70) as a backup camera. The D70 has a focus motor which allows you to use the older AF lenses, as well as the newer AF-S lenses. If you have some old F-mount lenses laying about, they should work with the D70. If you have manual focus lenses, be sure to read about the focus lock indicator in the users guide (manual) which can be downloaded from Nikon's web site.

Excellent!

What I love about it is its ability to AF with any autofocus F-mount lens even if its not AF-S or AF-I. I also appreciate the two wheels, one each for aperture and shutter control. What I hate about it is the tendency to misread CF cards. I opened up mine (bought secondhand) and discovered the ribbon cable was loose (lock was already broken) so I reinserted it back and taped it in place. So far, so good. I'm planning to buy a second D70 to take over the duties of my flash-disabled D50 which I plan to convert to IR.

Sure, it's a fine camera. You do realize don't you that it is a 6.1 megapixel… Not 61.
