Nikon D70 not working. Won't take pictures

I got a Nikon D70 DSLR from a stolen goods auction. I was so excited and went around the house focusing it and changing the settings… We didn't have a memory card for it at that point. We got one today and clicking the shutter button does nothing. Though, when it's clicked, on the top screen a displayed 56y or 5 (y maybe? It looks like an uncompleted y or uncompleted 5… ) turns to RO or 0 and then the y or 5 character.

So… I have no idea why it's doing that and I've tried googling, but all I can find are posts about the flash not working. And, maybe that has something to do with it… But I don't know.

Could you take a photo of what is being displayed on the LCD with another camera and post it on e.g. Tinypic.com to show it here?

Also, have you formatted the memory card in the camera? That's a common cause of all kinds of error. The shutter release should have happened though.

Hmm… Try holding the AE-L/AF-L button while pressing the shutter release button. If the shutter was locked because of focusing problems, then that will bypass these. It'd not be a solution but it'd help with the diagnosis of the problem.
