Big difference between f/1.8 and f/3.5?

I'm considering buying a portrait lens for my Nikon camera. One of my lenses is a 18-55mm f/3.5 kit lens. It was free with my Nikon D5100, so I never bothered investing into another portrait lens. Although, recently I began taking pictures of family with the kit lens and as expected, struggles with light conditions indoors. I'd like to avoid using flash indoors because when I've used flash before, it overpowers everything and even if I adjust accordingly, I get unfavorable shadows. So I'd like to avoid that route.

So now I'm interested in purchasing a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens. Will I see a large difference in camera opportunity potential?

And will this mount on my D5100, DX format?

Added (1). Thank you so much! I would purchase the f/1.4, but I'm buying a 40mm Micro f/2.8 lens soon for outdoor macro. So I can't get too excited! Haha Thanks again to both of you!

Ideal Nikkor Micro Lens?

I have a budget of about $650 and I have a Nikon D5100.

I currently use my kit lens and it gives nice results for Macros if I edge near it's 10 inch focus point. Although, I have to be spot on at that 10 inch point for good shots and even then, I have to use Lightroom to sharpen further. I don't like relying on Lightroom for sharpening.

I want to be as close as I can. What Nikkor Micro lens do you recommend?

Added (1). Thank you so much AWboater! You've cleared up a lot for me! I'm looking at the 40mm you suggesting and I'm really digging the price, but I also found an 85mm lens.

I'm really liking the sample pics. Is it worth the jump in price for the increased focal length?
I'm debating between the 40mm you mentioned and the 85mm.

Hi. I have a Nikon D3100 and I bought a IR 720 infrared filter. I try to make some IR photos, but the picture looks red (sunny day, 8sec exposed, ISO 400, 50mm, F8). I saw some photos, try to make with the same ISO setings and exposer time, but thei also looks red. What I should do?

Refer me to some lenses for my Nikon d5100?

I just recently purchased my Nikon d5100 and absolutely love it! But now I'm living in a much different part of America (in a National Park), and I want to get a few new lenses. I'm looking for a good wide angle lens and a decent zoom lens and maybe even a macro. I would prefer to spend no more than $400 on either, but, of course, quality is important. Any suggestions? (I have no brand preference, btw.)
