SLR or point and shoot camera?

I'm studying abroad next semester and I'm looking for a camera to take with me. The size and weight isn't really important. I'm a camera novice, but what I'm concerned about is getting the biggest bang for my buck. I have a rather constricted budget (because I'm a poor college student), so if I sprung for an SLR, I would probably have to just stick with the kit lens. I've heard that there are cameras that are not DSLRs, but have most of the same features and capabilities, just with no interchangeable lenses. Since I probably couldn't afford other lenses anyway, what kind of cameras that fit that description are there? I've also found a Nikon D3100 within my price range. If I can't afford additional lenses, is that any better than some time of midrange camera? Anything helps! Thanks!

Added (1). My most prevalent question is whether the lowest level SLR (ie. Nikon D3100) is worth it with ONLY the kit lens.

Added (2). If I were to decide against an SLR, what's the next best thing?

FX lens on nikon d5100?

I plan on getting the nikon d5100 with the nikon 50mm 1.8g lens which is a FX lens. Will this be a problem? If I'm correct, the d5100 is a dx body.

My computer won't recognize either my SD card reader or my camera?

My computer recently died, so I bought another one. I took some photos today and tried to download them using my Dynex card reader. Nothing… No "found new hardware" message popped up, not even the little box that asks you to select what action you'd like to do. I then attached my camera to the computer and, again, nothing, although "PC" appeared on the camera's display, so it knew it was attached, at least. Under "cameras and scanners" no devices show up. What can I do? I'm using XP - old computer was XP also - and the camera is a Nikon D50.

Digital Camera recommendations? - 1

I will be using the camera more for vlogging than taking pictures.

I've been told that Nikon d3200 is a good camera for both video recording and photo shooting however is there any cheaper alternatives?

A list will be much appreciated!

DSLR Camera- my pictures are either blurry or too dark?

Hi, I have been an owner of a Nikon D40, and am only completely satisfied with it when I have sufficient light. Otherwise my pictures are either too blurry (I slow the shutter speed to bring in more light) or they're too dark (I speed up the shutter speed to reduce blur), and I have never found a comfortable medium. Are there any other settings I can adjust? I have tried playing with ISO and manual aperture (so the camera chooses the shutter speed) and am still disappointed with the results. Any help would be greatly appreciated as no tutorial or online blogs are proving useful.
