When shooting, how do you get the image to appear on lcd, instead of having to look through the image looker-thingy. I'm not sure what it's called.

That thingie is called the viewfinder. What you want is called "life view", which is a feature that the D3000 does not have.

The viewfinder is superior to life view anyway, so it's not a big loss unless you want to use your DSLR as an expensive point and shoot camera.

Jens is spot on for this question.

The feature is called "live view" and the D3000 does not have that feature. To many photographers, live view is useless. You extend your arms to look at the LCD therefore creating more room for blur and unsteadiness. When you look through the viewfinder, the camera is close to you, creating more stable shots.
Not to mention that when you are trying to take a picture of a moving object, it is much faster to look through the viewfinder because the light goes through the lens, bounces off of a couple of mirrors, directly into your eye, instead of hitting a photosensor that has to decode information, send it through wires, and has to show it on the lcd screen. The time is minuscule, but it is enough to miss a shot.

ANOTHER reason why you really should not use it is because it cuts your batter life to a third of what it is without live view.

the only pro I see for using the live view is the fact that in crowds, you can lift your arms up, look at the LCD and take a better aimed shot.
