Finally I'm getting my first dSLR this year! I have a question, since this is my first large investment (if you call it that) as a college student, is it worth it? I want to get into photography and thought that this camera would be great for me.

The best entry level DSLRs are the Canon 1200D, the Nikon D3300 and the Pentax K-500.

Here is a comparative review

In summary - they are all very good - they are grading excellence. The Canon is the cheapest, the Nikon is the most expensive, the Pentax is the one recommended.

I have used Canon since 1977 when I traded my Practika for an AE-1 so beware of bias!
I would personally avoid Nikon because of the ridiculous way that their entry level cameras will not autofocus with the whole range of lenses. Not an issue with Canon and Pentax and not an issue for any but the most serious amateur who would probably buy a higher range model anyway. Just something to consider if you think your hobby may become serious.
Pentax hasn't quite managed to build enough momentum to shove aside the big 2 despite making superb DSLRs. As a result there's a limited number of 3rd party lenses and other accessories to fit. However, if I was starting again I would look VERY hard at Pentax. I'd skip the 1200D and get a 700D or 750D (T5i or T6i). They are not much more expensive and compete more directly with the Nikon D3200/D3300 and Pentax K500. Even a used 650D or 700D would be better than a new 1200D. The "worth" or value of the item that you purchase has a lot to do with what you're going to be doing with it. I would say it's probably worth it, but then again, I have no idea how you're going to be using it.

I agree with BriaR - take a very close look at the Pentax K50 (a.k.a K500) as it's the best DSLR in its price range.
