What would be the right camera for me?

I want to buy a Nikon DSLR camera.

I would like a small one, perhaps the smallest that they do, that takes good pictures, I'm not worried about recording films. I just want a small, dslr by nikon that takes good high quality pictures. With good focus and that.

I'm willing to pay just over 400 pounds.

You may go for the Nikon D3000 with no movie mode and live view but an outstanding price and image quality so you can invest more on lens and other accessories.there's also the new D3100 including the above specs and a higher 14.2 MP sensor. At the end… You decide

The cheapest Nikon DSLR that is still being produced is the Nikon D3000 at 550usd (I don't know if 400pounds is enough for that)

but, you can also ask your local store if they still sell
a D80, 10megapixels
D60, 6megapixels… All of the cameras above do not have videos…

if your money is not enough perhaps you can settle on the extended zoom cameras… They have fixed lenses…
Nikon P100 is one of them…

However, I believe 400pounds is enough for a Sony DSLR. Sony DSLR's are the cheapest out there… And, if the A290 or A390, if you ignore video functions, is better than those fixed lens extended zooms.

or

You can choose the Pentax K-x

it does have video,
however, it runs on four AA batteries.

Both the Pentax and Sony are good cameras.
