It honestly doesn't matter. My sister and mom both have nikons, cheap and high end ones and they both work amazing. But I have a couple friends with canons and they're just as good. There really isn't a difference. Just compare like battery life and picture resolution then decide, they're both awesome brands.

I'm a canon person. I'd say that canons are easier to use. Nikon are also very good. Nikon lens are probably a little better, but you can't really tell! Either a Canon or Nikon, they are both pretty nice to start with! You won't make a mistake by purchasing either one! Canon T1i, T2i, T3i… Might be close to 500$

Nikon is the good camera

The two cameras that fall in that $500 mark are the Nikon D3000 and the Canon Rebel Xs

let her choose which one she likes better/ is more comfortable with

Technically nikon is the better camera however cannon is easier to use. So for a 14 year old… I would go with the Cannon because it's easy to use ie) point and shoot. And it's still a good camera.

Nikon and Canon are exact equals. It's a matter of personal preference entirely. Also add Pentax to the list of candidates.

Take your daughter to the store and have her choose for yourself. The camera brand is a serious decision to make, as one will be starting a whole camera system - one can't just switch to another brand once one has invested into several lenses and so on. Hence she should get a camera from the brand that she feels most comfortable with, as she'll stick to that brand possibly for life.

Buy the one that's cheapest, there's no prominent difference between Canon & Nikon. Also consider Olympus and Pentax, as they are good brands.
