Short answer: If you want an APS-C format DSLR that will last you for many years and allow you to grow into it over that time, then look at the Nikon D7xxx series and the Canon 80D and 77D.

You can't say Nikon is better than Canon or that Canon is better than Nikon. There are simply too many DSLRs from each brand, each designed with a different user in mind. Canon, for example, has more than two dozen different DSLR models. Some are going to be better than others. Some, like the 7D Mark II or the 1Dx Mark II, are specifically designed for the sports & wildlife shooters. On the other hand, the EOS 5DS R is designed for those who need to print very large such as landscape photographers. These shooters don't care that the 5DS R doesn't have as good high ISO performance than other cameras. That's not why people buy it.

So who's better and which one is best is very, very, very subjective. If you want to know which camera body (or bodies) are more advanced than the T3i or T5i, simply go to and check out Canon's lineup. Nikon has the same thing on their website.

Each DSLR is designed with a specific group of photographers in mind. Which one are you in? I certainly can't say because you have not given any information regarding the types of photography you want to do. Knowing that will dictate which camera body would be better, if not the best, for you. Plus, you also didn't provide a budget. No use to recommend a $5,000 EOS 1Dx if your budget is less than $500.

Each brand has a lot of loyal customers who will all say that their brand of choice is best; it's very tribal. There's no one right answer here. It could be that the Nikon D7xxx series is going to be better for you or it could be that the EOS 7D Mark ii is best for you. Who knows?

One thing is certain, if you go with an EOS 80D or 77D, or a Nikon D7xxx series of DSLR, you will get a camera that will have more capabilities than you're likely to need as a beginner. This is a good thing as it means that the camera is something that you can grow into over the next few years. Getting a T or D3xxx series can easily mean that you'll want to upgrade within the next 18 months or sooner.

But I can't say which one is best because there's no clear camera that has something so unique that everyone is flocking to it. The only exception is video performance. Simply put, Nikon's video features and capabilities just suck to high heaven. Unless you go with the D500, stay far, far away from Nikon if video is a major need for you. Canon offers SOME DSLRs with really good video performance, but you won't find it in their T series. Instead, the 80D is Canon's best APS-C format DSLR for video. In full-frame format the best would be the 5D Mark IV.

I shoot with Pentax and let the children squabble. Look at the K-70 to see why.
